History of Sergio Martinez Boxing Career

Sergio Gabriel Martinez was born on Feb. 21, 1975 in Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Sergio Martinez is the middle brother of three. His father, Hugo Alberto, was a metal worker, who along with his wife Susana Griselda saw the need to uproot the family in order to provide food on their table. The family travels took them to places such as Quilmes, the Capital District of Buenos Aires, to Mar del Plata, and back to Quilmes.
Sergio made it through elementary school and ultimately took English courses as well as viable secretarial classes. Eventually he had to forgo his studies when he saw the need to help his father feed the family by working from sun up to sun down.
From a very young age Sergio Martinez athletic ability was apparent. He starred on his local soccer team, Claypole, where he was the leading goal getter. At the age of 20 Sergio came very close to being signed by 1st division Los Andes. Sergio Martinez played beside players that today are still playing in the top leagues of Argentina.
Following a family custom, Sergio Martinez began to box at the age of 20 along with his uncle Ruben Paniagua. He was so talented that only five weeks later he made his amateur debut and was victorious over Jose Pisani.
During this period Sergio Martinez was being handled by his two uncles; Raul and Carlos Paniagua. His unique crowd pleasing style caught on, making him a hit with fans as well as the news media. His nickname "Maravilla" or Marvelous One" comes from a moniker that has stuck with him for the rest of his boxing career.
During an exceptional amateur boxing career with a total of 41 bouts, Martinez was a 2-time Argentine champion as well as Inter Continental champion. He was a member of the National Team where he participated in the 1997 world amateur championship in Hungary, along with teammates Omar Narvaez, Javier Alvarez, Fabricio Nieva, Guillermo Saputo, and Santiago Nieva.
Sergio Martinez had his first professional boxing fight on December 27, 1997 in Ituzaingo, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
After facing a fairly low level of opposition for his first 17 fights in Argentina, Martinez fought overseas for the first time, travelling to the United States to face Antonio Margarito. The fight took place on February 19, 2000 at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The contest started badly for Martinez as Margarito scored a knockdown in the first round. Although Martinez improved and had some success in the early rounds, he was hurt by a number of punches in round 7 leading to a stoppage by the referee, thus handing Martinez his first loss.
Sergio Martinez claimed the interim WBC light middleweight title on October 4, 2008, beating Alex Bunema via an eighth round retirement. On February 14, 2009 Martinez fought to a majority draw against Puerto Rican Kermit Cintron. The fight was controversial for a number of reasons; during the seventh round Martinez knocked Cintron down with a clean left hand shot, the referee reached the count of ten and waved the fight off. However, this was in doubt by Cintron, who claimed that the knockdown was a result of a headbutt. Cintron's protestations led to the referee overturning his decision and the fight continued. The fight went the twelve round distance and the scorecards revealed a draw, many ringside observers felt that the decision was a robbery and that Martinez easily outboxed Cintron and should have gained the victory.
On December 5, 2009 Sergio Martinez fought Paul Williams in a non-title middleweight bout at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall. Both boxers traded knockdowns in an opening round of a contest that has been described as a Fight of the Year candidate.
Sergio Martinez stayed at middleweight and challenged the world champion Kelly Pavlik. Martinez defeated Pavlik via undisputed decision in a bout which saw Martinez overcome an early knockdown to then dominate the late rounds. Pavlik had cuts above both eyes for several rounds which didn't stop bleeding; he said they affected his vision and performance.
On November 20th, 2010 Sergio Martinez got a chance to avenge his loss to Paul Williams. Many speculated that this would be another Fight of the Year candidate. Approximately one minute into the second round, Martinez knocked Williams out with an over the top left hand to retain his title. The knockout has already been called by many as the Knockout of the Year.
